The walking tour will start at 10.30 am in Piazza Alcalà (McDonalds entrance) and proceed to the "Pescheria", the most colorful, animated, chaotic and therefore characteristic fish market of Catania.After that we will stop at Piazza Duomo with its fountain where is carved "O Liotru", the elephant symbol of Catania: the various legends that accompany it consider it magical and protector from the eruptions of Etna. We will proceed with the visit of the Mother Church dedicated to the Mistress of the city (Sant'Agata) destroyed and rebuilt several times after earthquakes and eruptions of Etna: the first construction dates back to around 1070 and of that time only the apse remains, all the rest is from a later period. The tour will continue with an optional visit to the Ancient Theater **, a Greek-Roman theater dating back to the 2nd century and highlighted from the end of the 19th century. Stop for lunch (not included). The tour will continue with a stop at Piazza Università, one of the most scenic squares in the historic center of Catania. Passage along the Via dei Crociferi, protected as a Unesco World Heritage Site and characterized by the presence, in just 200 meters, of four churches, all masterpieces of Baroque art: Church of San Benedetto, Church of San Francesco Borgia, Church of San Giuliano, Church San Camillo.We will proceed in the direction of Piazza Stesicoro, one of the most popular squares in Catania, due to its central location and proximity to the "Fera o 'Luni" market. The last stop of the Tour is the Giardino Bellini (or Villa Bellini), one of the two oldest gardens and one of the four main parks in Catania. Locally it is often referred to simply as "'a Villa". Optionally you can visit the Ursino Castle ***, built by Frederick II of Swabia in the thirteenth century, was a symbol of imperial authority and power in Sicily. Conclusion of the Tour at 16.30.
