Agrigento

Agrigento

Few manage to hold back the excitement when the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento appears to the eye. In this hill that slowly descends towards the sea, the Greek temples remind us that Agrigento was one of the most beautiful and richest cities in the ancient world. Indeed, "the most beautiful city of mortals" as Pindaro called it. Agrigento, or Girgenti as it was called until 1927, inspired poets and writers: Pirandello, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Sciascia and Camilleri used Agrigento as a metaphor for the whole world. The historic center is still a small jewel of Southern architecture, without forgetting the naturalistic beauty of the Scala dei Turchi.
