The walking tour will start at 10.30 am at Parco Archeologico della Neapolis *, which houses most of the monuments of Greek and Roman Syracuse. It is the most representative area of the ancient Greek city with vast green areas from which, through an avenue traced on the ancient Roman road, you can access the main archaeological monuments. The Teatro Greco is certainly among the best known in the ancient world and is also the largest in size in Sicily: the work of the architect Damocopo called Mirylla (5th century BC) is still used today for classical theatrical performances; the Antiteatro Romano , one of the largest buildings of the Roman age excavated in the living rock whose construction date is still uncertain (1st century BC). The interior of the park is characterized by the presence of the so-called Latomie, quarries from which the stones for the buildings were once extracted, among which the main one is the Latomia del Paradiso, which houses the Orecchio di Dionigi and the Grotta dei Cordari, the most famous of the artificial caves. The Altar of Hieron (3rd century BC) is one of the most representative monuments of the wealth of Syracuse, a gigantic altar, probably dedicated to Zeus Eleuterio. The Church of San Nicolò ai Cordari is a Norman building from the 11th century and was one of the first churches built in Syracuse. After the visit of the park we will stop for lunch (not included). It will continue with a visit to the island of Ortigia, to be reached on foot or by public or private transport (not included). Ortigia is the soul of Syracuse, considered one of the most beautiful inhabited islands in the world, even if it is not an island. In fact it is connected to the mainland by the Umbertino bridge and the Santa Lucia bridge. After crossing the bridge you immediately come across the Temple of Apollo, the oldest in Sicily but of which, unfortunately, not much remains since used over time as a mosque and Christian church. A little further on is the Diana Fountain (Artemis), which tells the myth of the Nymph Arethusa transformed into a source by the Goddess herself. The tour will continue with a visit to Piazza Duomo, surrounded by noble palaces. The Baroque architecture of the Duomo, conceived as a precious treasure chest, hides one of the most famous and best preserved Doric-style monuments in Sicily: the temple of Athena. At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to visit the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, famous for the presence of the last canvas painted by Caravaggio which represents the burial of Santa Lucia. Optionally you can visit the Maniace Castle, which stands on the tip of the island and is a magnificent example of military architecture of the Swabian period **. Conclusion of the Tour at 16.30.
